Digital Stories Institute 2005
July 11, 2005

Prepared By: Kelly Childers

The day started at 9:05am, with Karen welcoming everyone to this year’s digital stories institute. She followed the welcome by explaining the project itself along with the mission statement. Dr. Deloris Johnson broken up all of the madness by bringing the entire group a nice present of fresh parking passes. Getting back on track we went around the room and introduced ourselves. After all of the introductions were made, Karen finished by explaining the black notebook that everyone received.

We gently moved into to world of weblogs. Everyone made their way to the digital stories weblog, where they were to login and begin our “Writing into the Morning” activity. There was lots of discussion back and forth with little sound being made with the exception of the clicking of keys. Isn’t technology grand? Today’s activity asked us to discuss digital stories as well as what we would like to accomplish this week.

After having a short break we quickly we back to the computers and looked at an online digital story titled, “Whose race is this?” We were asked to look at and discuss different aspects of this digital story among the group. This was a simple way to actually see a digital story that someone else had already prepared.

Writing prompt number two came in next. This writing prompt brought us away from the computer and put in our hands crayons and brightly colored neon paper. Diane asked us to think back to a time in our lives and draw a simple map. Some people chose to draw things like the neighborhood that they grew up in, their own back yard and many others. Once we were finished drawing out our maps, we made list of ideas including events or people that came to mind as we looked at our maps. The maps and ideas were discussed in small groups.

Lunch time came around the noon hour. Many participants made their way over to the student center for food and fellowship. Karen welcomed us all back promptly at 1:05. After lunch we looked over our maps and list and began writing our first draft to the digital stories. Toward the end of the day Kelly aka “Teachers Pet” and Johan aka “The Kid” showed the group their digital stories. We ended the day with an exit slip that had us examining the ideas for our own stories as well as our teaching practices. Class will resume bright and early at 9am tomorrow.
